Albert Field
George Albert Field Jr. was born in 1916, in New Jersey. Educated at Columbia and Harvard, Albert Field was a teacher in New York City. At the 1930 World's Fair Field’s life-long passion for Dali began when he experienced the artist’s ‘‘Dream of Venus,'' a Surrealist fun house. The Museum of Modern Art’s 1941 exhibit of Dali’s work increased his interest. Field met Dali in the early 1940s and when Dali was in New York they met weekly and discussed work attributed to Dali. Field visited Dali at his home many times and was privileged to watch the artist painting. In 1955, Salvador Dalí asked Field to be his official archivist. Eventually Field began to concentrate on Dali’s printed work. He made more than forty trips to Europe tracking down the location, authenticity and provenance of Dali’s lithographs, etchings and other printed works. He published his work in 1996 in the ''Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dalí.'' The book's introduction was written by A. Reynolds Morse, chairman and former director of the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. On his death in 2003 Albert Field donated a portion of his research material, books, watercolors, prints and objects to the Salvador Dalí Museum. Jerry Bengis, ISA appraised those items for the Field’s estate. Photo: Albert Field with Salvador Dali at the Hotel St. Regis in New York © Foto: Dali-Archiv/Marco-VGk |
